Stars Urge UK to Block Paramount-WB Merger

Several prominent actors, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Alan Cumming, and Benedict Wong, are urging the U.K. government to block the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. In an open letter to Culture Minister Lisa Nandy, they stated that the deal "threatens to inflict immense harm on the British public" and could be a pivotal decision for the U.K.'s film, television, and media sectors.

The actors expressed concerns that the merger would lead to job cuts, canceled productions, and a decrease in commissioned content and risk-taking within the industry. They specifically highlighted the potential consolidation of control over historical news archives from entities like CNN and CBS, arguing this could compromise the integrity of historical memory.

While the Competition and Markets Authority is also reviewing the merger, Nandy has the power to decide if it is in the public interest. She has indicated she is "minded to intervene" in the deal. This situation unfolds as Nandy also manages other significant media matters, including the acquisition of ITV by Sky and the BBC's royal charter renewal.

Globally, the European Commission has approved the merger with conditions. In the U.S., however, the deal faces opposition and Paramount has agreed to postpone it until after an antitrust trial.
