UK Rail Regulator Blocks New London Train Routes
8 Oct
Summary
- Regulator vetoed new London train services due to line congestion.
- Insufficient space on the west coast main line cited for rejection.
- Additional London-Blackpool services also rejected by the regulator.
Plans for new direct train services linking London to Wrexham and Rochdale have been blocked by the rail regulator, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). The ORR cited "significant pressure" and insufficient capacity on the busy west coast main line as reasons for its decision, stating that new routes would jeopardize the overall reliability of the railway.
This rejection impacts Wrexham's potential to leverage its recent cultural and sporting boom, fueled by its Hollywood owners. Similarly, proposed new Lumo services to Rochdale faced another rebuff. The ORR also denied Avanti's request to increase London-Blackpool services, though it did approve one additional London-Chester evening service.
The regulator emphasized that the capacity and performance of the southern section of the west coast main line have not improved since previous similar applications were rejected in 2025. Essential gaps in the current timetable are needed to manage disruptions and prevent delays from escalating, ensuring better reliability for all passengers.
