The figures underscore why university spinouts attract considerable political attention, despite representing a small fraction of cutting-edge UK businesses. For instance, the University of Manchester, while ranking fourth nationally in spinouts, lags far behind Cambridge in investment, receiving over 50 times less funding. Similarly, Swansea University, despite producing more spinouts than some Russell Group institutions, averages a fraction of the investment rounds seen at Cambridge.
The data also reframes concerns about American investors acquiring British innovation, showing that only about one in 40 active spinouts are US-owned. This suggests that the more pressing threat to the UK's spinout ecosystem comes not from overseas, but from the struggle to foster growth and investment across a wider geographical spread within the country.
