UK Families Face Holidayless Summer Amidst Soaring Costs
23 Jun
Summary
- Over a quarter of UK families cannot afford a summer holiday this year.
- Rising living costs and travel expenses are primary barriers for families.
- Many families are dipping into savings or relying on relatives for trips.

More than a quarter of UK families will not be taking a summer holiday this year, primarily because of the rising cost of living and escalating travel expenses. A survey revealed that 27% of families with children aged five to 18 have no break booked.
Despite these financial pressures, 42% of parents feel obligated to provide a summer holiday. Among those who have booked a trip, a third used savings and 38% received financial aid from relatives. Airbnb has donated £300,000 to the Family Holiday Charity to help over 300 low-income families.
Rob Parkinson of the Family Holiday Charity highlighted the benefits of family breaks but stressed the need for systemic change. He noted that while initiatives like Airbnb's are helpful, they do not address the root causes preventing access to holidays for many families across the UK.
