Weeks Away From Drug Shortages: UK on Alert

Drug manufacturers are expressing grave concern over potential drug shortages in the UK within weeks, directly linking the issue to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. They warn that approximately 85% of all NHS prescriptions, including paracetamol, antibiotics, stroke prevention medicines, and certain cancer drugs, could be affected as early as June. These concerns stem from a significant shortage of chemicals and solvents crucial for manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients. Medicines containing paracetamol and aspirin are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on petrochemical by-products, which have been impacted by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This disruption threatens both the availability and cost of essential pharmaceuticals.

Experts highlight that a substantial portion of pharmaceuticals depend on petroleum-derived inputs for common medications ranging from antibiotics to pain relievers. The potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz poses a significant constraint on the availability and cost of these critical pharmaceutical ingredients. This situation was previously communicated to the Secretary of Health and Social Care, urging the inclusion of medicines supply on the national risk register. In response, the government stated it is actively working to bolster domestic medicine manufacturing and reassured that most medicines remain in good supply. Robust measures are in place to manage potential disruptions and protect patients, including buffer stocks and alternative procurement options.
