UK Bans Weight Loss Pill Ads
4 Nov
Summary
- Four adverts for prescription-only weight loss pills were banned.
- Voy, Juniper, and MedExpress ads promoted medicines to the public.
- Advertising Standards Authority enforces rules on drug promotion.
In a significant crackdown, the UK's Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned four advertisements that promoted prescription-only weight loss medications to the public. The banned adverts were from companies including Voy, Juniper, and MedExpress. These promotions violated a strict rule prohibiting the advertising of prescription-only medicines directly to consumers.
Voy's "The weight is over" campaign featured imagery and wording likely to mislead the public into believing they were advertising the newly licensed oral Wegovy tablets. Despite small-print references to a glucomannan food supplement, the ASA found these insufficient to alter the overall impression. Similarly, adverts from Juniper and MedExpress were banned for promoting oral weight-loss prescription-only medicines, even without direct naming.
These rulings highlight the ASA's ongoing review of the sector, with investigations manager Catherine Drewett stating that advertisers must consider the overall impression their ads create. Julian Beach of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) welcomed the action, stressing that prescription medicines are not consumer goods and their promotion can have serious public health impacts.
Voy and MedExpress have responded, with Voy stating its campaigns aligned with UK standards and that the advert was withdrawn. MedExpress confirmed the advert was removed after internal review prior to ASA contact. Both companies pledged to continue working with regulators.
