UK AI 'Stargate' Project: £20bn Investment Was Hypothetical
4 Jul
Summary
- £20bn of touted AI investment was hypothetical.
- OpenAI never visited key Stargate UK datacentre site.
- UK government sought 'big announcement' for Trump visit.
The UK's ambitious Stargate UK datacentre project, touted as a significant AI undertaking, is now under scrutiny. Approximately £20bn of the £30bn in potential investment appears to have been hypothetical, according to new findings. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, reportedly never visited a key proposed site for the project in North Tyneside.
The Stargate UK initiative was announced last year, accompanied by other high-profile US-UK tech deals during Donald Trump's visit to London. Government sources suggest the announcement was expedited to coincide with the visit, aiming for a substantial PR outcome. OpenAI's involvement was planned alongside Nscale and Nvidia to develop AI infrastructure.
Further investigation reveals that OpenAI and Nscale never met with local authorities at the Cobalt Park site. Nvidia did visit the North East combined authority, but this occurred in February 2026, months after the initial announcement. The government's justification for the £20bn figure suggests it represented the amount needed for the datacentre, rather than secured investment.
Local officials expressed surprise at the announcement, noting a lack of prior engagement. Doubts also persist regarding the site's infrastructure, including grid connection and energy capacity, which appear insufficient for a project of this scale. A government taskforce is reportedly working on developing the region's AI and datacentre infrastructure, with increased energy capacity planned.
