Summary
- Uber plans over 2,000 robotaxis by end of 2027.
- Company faces driver shortages and rising fuel costs.
- Waymo currently operates a larger autonomous fleet.

Uber announced plans to deploy more than 2,000 robotaxis by the end of 2027, aiming to reassure investors about its autonomous vehicle strategy. The company is targeting significant growth in its robotaxi fleet, with a long-term goal of over 120,000 driverless vehicles.
This expansion occurs while Uber grapples with operational challenges. Rising fuel costs, exacerbated by global conflicts, and a competitive labor market for drivers have impacted its core ride-hailing business. In response, Uber is implementing driver incentives, including enhanced fees and sign-up bonuses.
Uber's autonomous ambitions are progressing, with approximately 700 driverless vehicles expected on its platform this year. However, it faces stiff competition, particularly from Alphabet's Waymo, which already operates a substantial fleet. To fund these investments, Uber has undertaken workforce reductions, cutting about a tenth of its global employees.
The company's mobility revenue for the third quarter reached approximately $7.5 billion, slightly below analyst expectations. Operating profit was also affected by a significant provision for potential legal and tax settlements. Uber continues to expand its services globally, adding new cities to its operational map.
