Trican Well Service reported second-quarter results that showed flat revenue but a significant decrease in profitability. The company's revenue for the period was C$214.6 million, nearly identical to the previous year's C$213.8 million. However, adjusted EBITDA fell sharply to C$22.6 million, representing 11% of revenue, down from C$44.9 million or 21% in the prior year.
Several factors contributed to the reduced profitability. These included ongoing seasonal breakup conditions and record rainfall in central Alberta during June. Lower equipment utilization rates and persistent pricing pressures across various service lines also negatively affected earnings. The company also noted challenges in recovering increased operational costs for freight and fuel.
Financially, Trican posted a net loss of C$2.3 million, or C$0.01 per share, compared to a net income of C$19.5 million, or C$0.11 per share, in the corresponding period last year. Increased depreciation and amortization expenses, partly due to the acquisition of Iron Horse, along with technology initiative costs and higher share-based compensation, further impacted the bottom line.
