Travel Stocks Surge Despite Mixed Q1 Earnings
2 Jun
Summary
- Travel stocks saw an average price increase of 11.8% post-earnings.
- Consumer discretionary travel sector revenues beat estimates by 1.6%.
- Choice Hotels' revenue surpassed expectations but missed profit targets.

The end of the first quarter earnings season offers a chance to evaluate companies within the consumer discretionary sector, particularly travel and vacation providers. This sector, characterized by non-essential goods and services, faces inherent challenges due to economic sensitivity and fickle customer bases.
Travel and vacation providers experienced mixed results in Q1. Collectively, their revenues exceeded consensus estimates by 1.6%. However, guidance for the upcoming quarter was notably lower, falling by 9.3%. Despite these mixed signals, share prices for these stocks have performed well, averaging an 11.8% increase since their latest earnings reports.
Choice Hotels (NYSE:CHH), primarily a franchisor with nearly all properties under franchise agreements, reported Q1 revenues of $340.6 million, a 2.3% increase year-on-year. This revenue figure beat analyst expectations by 2.5%. Despite the top-line success, the company missed adjusted operating income and EPS estimates, leading to a 7.3% stock price drop to $108.85 since its earnings release.
