- Material made from tomato waste replaces leather.
- Company won PETA's Best Innovation in Textile award.
Pritesh Mistry, inspired by visits to Kanpur's leather tanneries, has pioneered a sustainable fashion solution using tomato waste. The Bio Company transforms unused tomatoes into a unique material called Bioleather, which serves as a plant-based alternative for bags, shoes, and accessories.
This innovative process utilizes pectin from tomato waste, combined with biopolymers and natural fibers. The Bio Company collects waste from farms and food processing units, creating a flexible, biodegradable, and vegan material that avoids plastics like PU or PVC.
This groundbreaking work earned The Bio Company the Best Innovation in Textile award at the 2021 PETA Vegan Fashion Awards. The company was reportedly producing approximately 5,000 meters of Bioleather monthly, effectively converting food waste into a valuable business opportunity.
