Thane Minister Announces 2026 Deadline for Ghodbunder Highway Upgrades
10 Nov
Summary
- Ghodbunder highway undergoing major overhaul, service lanes merged into main carriageway
- Resurfacing work, service road widening, pipeline relocation to be completed by January 2026
- Ongoing civic projects like beautification, new facilities also progressing

As of November 10, 2025, Thane's cabinet minister Pratap Sarnaik has announced a fresh deadline of January 2026 for the completion of all pending works on the Ghodbunder highway. The arterial road, which connects the far northeast and west ends of Mumbai suburbs, has been undergoing a major overhaul within the Thane city limits.
The ongoing project involves merging the service lanes on either side into the main carriageway and concretizing the entire stretch. This has resulted in several lanes being blocked, causing congestion for both city and outbound traffic. However, Sarnaik has assured that the "traffic woes on Ghodbunder highway will end by Jan 2026."
In addition to the road resurfacing work, the service road widening, laying of water pipelines, and relocation of power lines along the highway stretch will also be completed by the set deadline. The Public Works Department will expedite the process of handing over the entire highway stretch to the Thane Municipal Corporation after the resurfacing work is done.
Alongside the Ghodbunder highway upgrades, the pace of other ongoing civic projects in Sarnaik's constituency, such as the beautification of Nagla Bandar Creek and Mangrove Park, the construction of a new swimming pool at Upvan, and the development of various community facilities, is also expected to see progress in the coming months.
