Texas metropolitan areas are anticipated to experience significant economic growth from 2025 through 2030, despite prevailing national and global uncertainties. This expansion is projected to be uneven, with larger gains expected in the latter half of the forecast period.
The state's most populous urban centers are forecast to be key drivers of this growth. These seven major metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) are projected to add approximately 1.08 million jobs over the five-year horizon, accounting for about 78% of Texas' total projected employment gains.
Among the leading areas, the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown MSA is expected to exhibit the fastest growth, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.95% in wage and salary employment, surpassing the statewide rate of 1.78%. The Dallas-Plano-Irving economy is also set for robust expansion at 1.85% annually, and the Fort Worth-Arlington-Grapevine MD is projected to grow at 1.80% yearly.
Other significant MSAs also show promising outlooks. The El Paso MSA anticipates an annual job growth rate of 1.61%, while Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land is projected to add the most net new jobs statewide, estimated at 337,500 for a 1.83% growth pace. McAllen-Edinburg-Mission is expected to grow at 1.76% annually, and San Antonio-New Braunfels at 1.80%.
While population and economic growth are concentrated in larger MSAs, smaller metropolitan areas are also expected to contribute significantly to Texas' overall employment gains, accounting for 14.3%. These smaller centers are projected to add jobs at a minimum annual rate of 1.34%, with several, including Midland and Tyler, forecasting growth rates of 1.85%.
