EU Slams Temu with Massive Fine Over Unsafe Goods
28 May
Summary
- Temu fined €200 million for selling dangerous products.
- EU investigation found faulty chargers and unsafe baby toys.
- Temu must submit an action plan by August 28.

The European Union has levied a €200 million fine against the Chinese-owned online retailer Temu for failing to prevent the sale of illegal and dangerous products on its platform. Products investigated included dangerously unsafe baby toys and faulty chargers that failed basic electrical safety tests.
The European Commission stated that Temu did not sufficiently identify, analyze, or address the systemic risks posed by these items. This investigation, which commenced in October 2024, examined Temu's compliance with EU law as a Very Large Online Platform. Temu has declared its disagreement with the decision, deeming the fine disproportionate and is currently considering its options.
As part of the ruling, Temu is required to submit a comprehensive action plan by August 28, 2026, to rectify these safety lapses. The Commission will then review this plan over the subsequent two months to ensure compliance. This significant penalty is only the second imposed under the EU's Digital Services Act, following a previous fine against X.
