Teen Drops Social Media Addiction Lawsuit

A pivotal lawsuit, intended as a test case in the widespread litigation against social media companies for alleged addiction and mental health harms, was dropped by the teen plaintiff on Thursday. The 15-year-old from New Jersey had accused Meta Platforms, Google, and Snap Inc. of contributing to her addiction, depression, and self-harm. The companies stated the claims were dismissed without any payment. TikTok had previously settled with the plaintiff. Attorneys noted the teen's desire to resume her life, having initiated the process to push for changes protecting young people. Meta, facing separate trials concerning allegations of designing addictive platforms for children, continues to defend itself. Google-owned YouTube and Snap Inc. affirmed their commitment to providing safe experiences and robust safeguards for young users, respectively. Two other similar cases brought by teens are scheduled for trial in October, with TikTok having already settled those. Another bellwether case concluded in July when a teen plaintiff dropped claims against Meta after other defendants settled. Earlier this year, a trial resulted in verdicts against Meta and Google regarding addiction claims stemming from platform design.
