Tech Giants Brace for AI Spending Scrutiny
22 Oct
Summary
- Meta and Tesla earnings reports highlight AI investment returns.
- Tech stocks declined as AI spending sustainability concerns resurfaced.
- IBM, Lam Research, and Rollins also reported mixed financial results.
U.S. stock index futures experienced a sharp decline on Thursday, driven by investor reactions to quarterly earnings reports from Meta Platforms and Tesla. Renewed concerns regarding the sustainability of artificial intelligence spending cast a shadow over technology shares.
Meta Platforms reported strong third-quarter results, surpassing revenue and earnings estimates, and forecasting robust current-quarter revenue. However, the company raised its annual capital spending outlook to between $135 billion and $145 billion, signaling continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure. It also incurred a significant legal charge related to teen mental health litigation.
Tesla's shares dropped despite beating earnings estimates and reporting solid free cash flow. The electric vehicle maker's net income declined year-over-year, with automotive revenue falling due to reduced average selling prices and battery supply constraints. Tesla also cut its full-year capital expenditure forecast and revised its vehicle sales targets downwards.
Other technology firms also faced investor pressure. International Business Machines (IBM) and chip-equipment maker Lam Research reported results that beat some expectations but saw their shares slide amid concerns about gross margins and AI-related stock performance.
In contrast, freight railroad CSX and chemicals maker Dow reported stronger-than-expected results, with Dow benefiting from higher polyethylene prices and cost-cutting measures. Defense contractor Lockheed Martin raised its full-year sales and profit forecasts, citing sustained demand for military equipment amid geopolitical conflicts. Spotify shares climbed on a positive fourth-quarter operating income forecast, anticipating AI-powered features to boost user growth.
