Tata Unveils Petrol-Powered Harrier and Safari SUVs for 2025 Launch
12 Nov
Summary
- Tata to launch petrol versions of Harrier and Safari SUVs in December 2025
- New 1.5L turbo-petrol engine to deliver around 170 hp and 250-280 Nm of torque
- Petrol models expected to be priced slightly below diesel variants

In a strategic move, Tata Motors is gearing up to launch petrol-powered versions of its flagship Harrier and Safari SUVs in India on December 9, 2025. This expansion of Tata's premium SUV portfolio, which has so far relied solely on diesel power, comes as the company aims to cater to a wider range of customers.
Under the hood, both the Harrier and Safari petrol models will be powered by Tata's all-new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, part of the brand's in-house 'Hyperion' engine family. This unit, first previewed at the Auto Expo 2023, is expected to deliver around 170 bhp and 250-280 Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful petrol engines in the midsize SUV segment.
The introduction of the petrol variants is expected to broaden the appeal of the Harrier and Safari, particularly among city buyers and occasional drivers who tend to prefer quieter and lower-maintenance petrol powertrains. This move also aligns with Tata's broader strategy to future-proof its SUV lineup as diesel restrictions tighten in several urban centers.
The petrol-powered Harrier and Safari are anticipated to be priced slightly below their diesel counterparts, with the Harrier petrol expected to start under the Rs 14 lakh mark and the Safari petrol around Rs 15 lakh. This pricing strategy will enhance Tata's competitiveness against other petrol-heavy rivals in the midsize SUV segment, such as the MG Hector, Hyundai Alcazar, and Mahindra XUV700.
