Taste of Ethiopia Closing South Austin Location
1 Sep
Summary
- Rising costs of groceries and services forced the closure.
- The South Austin location will close at the end of September.
- Owners hope to return to Austin with a new location.

Taste of Ethiopia's South Austin restaurant, a fixture since 2017, is set to close its doors at the end of September. Owners Woinee Mariam and Solomon Hailu attribute this difficult decision to escalating operational costs, including groceries and services, as well as an anticipated increase in rent.
The couple, who have resided in Central Texas for approximately two decades, also operate the original Taste of Ethiopia location in Pflugerville, which opened in 2008 and continues to thrive. Mariam expressed the challenges of maintaining business operations amidst rising expenses.
While the South Austin closure is final, Mariam indicated that the owners are determined to eventually establish a new presence in Austin. Their initial foray into the restaurant business began with the successful Pflugerville establishment, which inspired their expansion to South Austin.
