Stars Fight Blackheath Housing Plan

Celebrities including Dominic Cooper, Jude Law, and Sarah Hadland are vocally opposing a proposed development of 45 new homes in Blackheath, a charming south London village. The plans, submitted by developer Acorn, aim to build terraced houses and flats in the Blackheath Station car park, which currently hosts a Sunday farmers' market.

Opponents argue the scale and design of the proposed blocks are out of character and would dwarf existing Victorian architecture. Concerns also include the drastic reduction of the 162-space car park to just 17, impacting local amenities and potentially creating parking chaos. More than 1,200 objections have been raised against the plans, with only a fraction of supportive comments.

Actor Dominic Cooper stated that residents are not anti-development but demand responsible projects that benefit local communities. He criticized the council for potentially prioritizing developer profits over public opposition. Local businesses have also voiced strong opposition, viewing the development as a threat to Blackheath's independent retailers and unique village atmosphere.

Jude Law, who grew up in Blackheath, expressed that the development would strain the village and noted the plans do not address genuine housing needs. Musician Chris Difford and Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler also voiced concerns about preserving Blackheath's character and skyline. Sir Terry Waite, a long-term resident, highlighted the negative impact on the farmers' market and increased road strain.

Acorn has stated that the pre-application process involved engagement with residents and stakeholders, and that the development will include much-needed affordable housing and public benefits. The local council is expected to vote on the plans imminently.
