Kroenke's real estate ventures initially flourished through the development of shopping centers, often anchored by Walmart, benefiting from his marriage to Walmart heiress Ann Walton Kroenke. He has surpassed other prominent billionaires on the list of largest landowners, such as John Malone and Ted Turner. The Emmerson family and Bill Gates also feature among the top landholders.

Farmland, ranchlands, and timberlands are increasingly sought after by the ultra-wealthy as a hedge against inflation and market fluctuations. This asset class is valued at $4.3 trillion, with farmland prices seeing a steady increase.
