5 Nov
Summary
- 100 new homes in Stornoway, 47 in Brechin
- Part of SSEN Transmission's plan to support 1,000 homes
- Homes to house workers, then become affordable/social housing

As of November 5th, 2025, energy company SSEN Transmission is set to build 147 new homes in Scotland. The company has announced plans to construct 100 properties in Stornoway, Lewis, and 47 in Brechin, Angus, as part of its broader initiative to support the building of 1,000 homes across the country.
The new homes will initially be used to accommodate workers involved in SSEN Transmission's major electricity infrastructure projects. Once these projects are completed, the properties will then be made available as affordable and social housing for local communities.
SSEN Transmission has signed deals with housing firms to progress the plans, with the new homes expected to be finished by the end of 2027. The Stornoway properties are linked to the Lewis Hub, a substation and converter station proposed for a site near the town, which is part of plans to lay a subsea cable between the Western Isles and Scotland's mainland to deliver power from island wind farms.
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes welcomed SSEN Transmission's investment, stating that Scotland's renewable energy capabilities present an "unprecedented opportunity to create jobs and deliver economic growth" across the country, and that it is vital to ensure supporting infrastructure, including housing, is in place to support the workforce and communities.
