The airline's financial struggles began to escalate after the pandemic, with rising labor costs and shifts in customer preferences impacting its profitability. An earlier attempt by JetBlue Airways to acquire Spirit was blocked by a federal judge two years ago due to antitrust concerns, leaving Spirit to navigate a challenging market independently.
Spirit previously projected a net profit of $252 million for last year, as per a December 2024 court filing. However, it reported a loss of nearly $257 million for the months spanning March 13 through June, after exiting its first Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The airline had attempted to enhance its appeal by offering roomier seats and bundled fares to compete with larger rivals.
