Snap's Spiegel Erases $550M Medical Debt for Californians

Snap co-founder Evan Spiegel and his wife, Miranda Kerr, have initiated a significant philanthropic effort, donating $550 million to eradicate medical debt for over 261,000 Californians. This substantial contribution is directed towards the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, an organization that has previously received substantial funding from MacKenzie Scott.

The donation follows a sophisticated model pioneered by MacKenzie Scott, who has herself donated over $26 billion through her platform, Yield Giving. Spiegel's strategy involves identifying scalable organizations and providing them with substantial, unrestricted capital to maximize impact, a method that has propelled Scott to become a leading philanthropist.

Undue Medical Debt operates by purchasing portfolios of distressed medical debt from hospitals at steep discounts, often pennies on the dollar. Instead of collecting on this debt, the organization permanently abolishes it, providing immense relief to individuals and families. San Diego and Los Angeles counties are slated to receive the largest portions of this debt forgiveness.

As of mid-July, eligible Californians are beginning to receive notifications confirming that their medical debts have been erased. This relief specifically targets those whose medical debt jeopardizes their access to essential care and overall economic stability, fundamentally altering their financial outlook.
