Budget airline SpiceJet is implementing significant workforce reductions as it navigates a severe financial crisis. Reports indicate that the airline's management has decided on manpower cuts, driven by a shrinking fleet and substantial financial obligations. This situation, characterized by prolonged salary delays and mounting dues, signals an urgent search for capital to ensure survival.
The immediate phase of these measures is expected to involve furloughs and unpaid leave, with projections suggesting over 500 employees could be affected. The airline, which currently operates with a significantly reduced number of its own aircraft supplemented by wet-leased planes, has cited "reduced operational capacity" for these decisions. These unpaid leave periods, set to last six months from April 1 to September 30, 2026, are proving financially untenable for many employees.
Adding to the turmoil, dozens of engineers who had resigned and were serving their notice period were informed on March 31, 2026, that their notice periods were waived, resulting in immediate departures without pay. This unprecedented move leaves many without income as they await new roles. Furthermore, salary payments have become increasingly delayed, with some higher-paid employees not receiving January salaries as of early April 2026, and ground staff facing two-month gaps.
Operational changes are also affecting pilots, with a revised contract for Q400 pilots potentially reducing monthly earnings by about 20%. Meanwhile, concerns are escalating over statutory dues, including unpaid GST, provident fund contributions, and TDS, which are estimated to exceed Rs 100 crore. The airline's total liabilities are reportedly over Rs 4,500 crore, despite a significant capital raise in September 2024.
