While Spain is targeting 22.5 gigawatts of battery storage by 2030, its current installed capacity is only around 400 megawatts. Regulatory delays and a lack of a proper capacity market have deterred investors, despite government efforts to streamline permitting and offer subsidies.
The country's limited power grid links to Europe further isolate it, protecting it from price spikes but also presenting challenges for energy management. Increasing electrification of the economy, moving beyond fossil fuels for transport and heating, is identified as the crucial next step.
Addressing these challenges is vital for Spain to maintain its renewable energy leadership and achieve its net-zero goals, especially as climate change impacts like heatwaves and wildfires intensify.
