Spain's Tourism Boom: Unregistered Rentals Drain Revenue

Spain's tourism sector saw a notable surge in the first half of 2013, with June alone attracting a record 6.3 million visitors, partly due to instability in North Africa impacting rival destinations. Overall, tourism injected over €24 billion ($32 billion) into the Spanish economy, a 6.6% increase from the previous year. However, this economic boost has not evenly benefited the traditional hospitality industry.

Data revealed a significant shift, with overnight stays in unregistered properties rising by over 10% year-to-date and 17.6% in June alone. The growing popularity of platforms like Airbnb, which sees Spain as its third-largest market, has been identified as a key factor. An estimated two-thirds of the €1.1 billion spent on overnight stays were with unregistered owners, posing a considerable challenge to tax collection efforts.
