21 May
Summary
- SpaceX committed over $2.8 billion to purchase gas turbines.
- Turbines will power data centers for Elon Musk's xAI unit.
- Investment highlights data center energy needs amidst shortages.

SpaceX recently revealed a significant financial commitment, exceeding $2.8 billion, for gas turbines essential to powering its artificial intelligence operations. This investment is channeled towards supporting the data centers for Elon Musk's xAI unit, which develops the Grok chatbot.
The substantial expenditure highlights SpaceX's reliance on gas turbines, even amidst prior public concerns and regulatory scrutiny over potential air pollution. These portable turbines are seen as a crucial, albeit temporary, solution to the widespread electricity shortages impacting the booming US data center sector.
These disclosures were made as part of SpaceX's IPO prospectus, intended to provide investors with a comprehensive view of its financial standing. The company has agreed to buy $805 million worth of turbines through 2029 and has a pending $2 billion deal for additional mobile gas turbines.
SpaceX operates two data centers, Colossus 1 in Memphis, Tennessee, and Colossus 2 in Southaven, Mississippi. As of recently, Colossus 2 saw the addition of 19 new portable turbines. The company's energy needs are substantial, with existing server capacity requiring approximately 1 gigawatt of power, comparable to a large US city's usage.
