28 May
Summary
- SpaceX's AI data center lease with Anthropic is for six months.
- The initial agreement involved $1.25 billion monthly payments for compute.
- Musk stated the short-term lease was SpaceX's request.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has clarified the terms of a lease agreement between SpaceX and AI company Anthropic concerning its Colossus AI training data center clusters. Musk stated on X that the current arrangement is a six-month lease. He indicated that while a multi-year extension is possible, SpaceX has not committed to such an arrangement.
Earlier reports suggested that Anthropic would pay SpaceX $1.25 billion per month for compute capacity through May 2029. However, Musk emphasized that the shorter lease term was a request from SpaceX, not Anthropic. He assured that SpaceX would provide a reasonable off-ramp for Anthropic but noted the possibility of needing the capacity back if compute resources become constrained.
These details emerged shortly after SpaceX's IPO filing, which mentioned that both companies could terminate their agreements with a 90-day notice. The filing did not specify the six-month lease duration. SpaceX's AI segment reported an operational loss of approximately $2.5 billion in the March quarter.
