South Korea Economy Surges on Chip Export Boom
27 Oct
Summary
- Economy grew 1.0% in Q3, beating expectations.
- Chip exports fuel strong growth, nearing $1 trillion.
- Private consumption saw its first decline in four years.

South Korea's economy demonstrated robust growth in the third quarter, surpassing initial expectations with a 1.0% expansion compared to the previous period. This acceleration was significantly propelled by a surge in chip exports, a key component of the nation's trade. The country is now poised to achieve an unprecedented $1 trillion in exports this year, positioning it among the top global economic performers.
This export momentum, particularly in semiconductors and machinery, contributed to a 2.3% rise in exports during the quarter. Facilities investment also saw a substantial increase of 4.1%, largely due to investments in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. However, a notable counterpoint to this strong economic performance was a 0.2% contraction in private consumption, the first such decline in almost four years.
