Astron Fuels South Africa Coast Amid Vessel Seizures
24 Feb
Summary
- Astron Energy deploys Pearl Kate tanker to boost fuel supply.
- Previous tanker Essien was seized by tax authorities last March.
- Tax crackdown in late 2023 disrupted Algoa Bay refuelling operations.

South Africa's Astron Energy is bolstering its marine fuel supply by deploying the bunkering tanker Pearl Kate along the coast. This deployment aims to compensate for lost capacity after the South African Revenue Service (SARS) detained and subsequently seized the tanker Essien last March.
The Essien, chartered by Astron, was seized due to allegations of improper declaration and failure to pay value-added tax, a case currently contested in court. This incident occurred following a broader tax enforcement drive by SARS in late 2023, which led to the detention of five vessels in Algoa Bay.
The tax crackdown significantly disrupted offshore refuelling services in Algoa Bay, affecting major companies and increasing demand for services along the Cape route due to rerouted global shipping. The arrival of the Pearl Kate, leased by Astron from AMSOL, is expected to partially restore South Africa's bunkering capabilities.
