8 Sep
Summary
- Chateau Diana Winery replaced Zinfandel grapes with sunflowers.
- Vineyard removals continue across Wine Country due to market conditions.
- The winery aims to attract visitors and bring joy during tough times.
Amidst challenges in California's wine industry, Chateau Diana Winery in Healdsburg has undertaken a unique transformation. An acre previously dedicated to Zinfandel grapes now features more than 3,000 sunflowers, offering a colorful landscape as an alternative to cleared vineyard sites.
Co-owner Corey Manning explained that this pivot is a strategic adaptation to shifting consumer tastes, particularly among younger adults, and the oversupply of grapes. The winery continues to produce wine and host tastings, sourcing grapes from elsewhere.
This initiative aims to attract visitors and inject joy into the community during a difficult economic period for wine producers. The winery also has plans to plant pumpkins, further diversifying its visitor attractions.
