SoftBank Bets Big: $87 Billion AI Data Centers for France

SoftBank Group has committed to an investment of up to $87 billion to establish AI data centers in France, marking a substantial development in the nation's artificial intelligence ambitions. French President Emmanuel Macron played a pivotal role, directly negotiating the terms with SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son over a two-month period, bypassing traditional diplomatic channels. This direct approach signifies the urgency in securing crucial AI infrastructure.

SoftBank confirmed an initial expenditure of €45 billion, approximately $52 billion, dedicated to building 3.1 gigawatts of AI data center capacity in the Hauts-de-France region by 2031. This initial phase is part of a broader €75 billion commitment for 5 gigawatts, contingent on the success of the first stage. The capacity figure is critical for supporting AI workloads.
