9 Sep
Summary
- SoFi reported record adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion, up 40%.
- Membership grew 35% to 15.8 million, with loan originations at $14.8 billion.
- Elevated stock multiples suggest little room for error in credit quality.
During the September 3 episode of Mad Money, Jim Cramer reviewed SoFi Technologies' stock performance, noting a surprising decline after a strong earnings report. He highlighted that despite a "solid top and bottom-line beat" in late July, the stock initially dropped 9% before rallying.
Cramer's confidence stems from SoFi's accelerating financial metrics. In the second quarter, the company achieved record adjusted net revenue of $1.2 billion, a 40% increase year-over-year. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.12. Management consequently raised full-year revenue guidance to $4.75 billion-$4.85 billion.
Business expansion remains robust, with 15.8 million members, a 35% increase. Loan originations across personal, student, and home lending hit an all-time high of $14.8 billion. Despite this growth, SoFi's forward earnings multiples remain elevated compared to traditional banks.
Concerns exist regarding potential increases in loan defaults or a decline in consumer credit quality. Volatility in interest rates could also affect loan portfolio values. Additionally, significant marketing and technology investments may constrain near-term profitability. As of the second quarter, 44 hedge funds held stakes in SoFi, with D E Shaw being a prominent shareholder.
