Snap Spins Off AI Video Team to Dotmo

Snap has announced the spinoff of its internal generative AI video team, which will operate as a new, independent company named Dotmo. This venture is set to concentrate on developing advanced AI models specifically designed for creating interactive gaming experiences. The decision to spin off the team reportedly stems from the substantial costs associated with conducting such cutting-edge work internally.

Dotmo will retain strong connections with its parent company, Snap. Snap will grant Dotmo a license to adapt its proprietary technology for gaming and interactive entertainment platforms. The initial team at Dotmo will consist of current Snap staff who are transitioning to lead this new enterprise. Although Snap is not directly funding Dotmo, its Chief Technology Officer, Bobby Murphy, will serve as the lead investor, holding a significant personal stake in the new firm. In return for the talent and technology license, Snap will acquire a substantial equity stake in Dotmo.

This strategic move marks Snap's second major spinoff this year, following the earlier separation of Specs into a dedicated smart glasses development company. Unlike the Specs spinoff, Dotmo's focus on digital experiences is outside Snap's current core business priorities. Spin-offs can offer cost savings, showcase assets, attract investor attention, and provide operational flexibility. By spinning out Dotmo, Snap aims to mitigate the financial burden of its AI efforts while retaining exposure to potential future successes through its equity ownership. Dotmo may also pursue external funding in the future.
