3 Mar
Summary
- Smyrna City Council unanimously approved the closure of its 64-bed municipal jail.
- The city is the last in Cobb County to operate its own jail facility.
- About 10 jail employees will be relocated to new positions without pay reduction.

The City of Smyrna is preparing to close its 64-bed municipal jail located on Atlanta Road. The decision, unanimously approved by the City Council, signifies a significant shift in local law enforcement operations.
Smyrna was the last municipality within Cobb County to maintain its own jail. City Administrator Mike Jones stated that closing the facility and repurposing the building is a budget-neutral action. This move allows for the reallocation of fiscal and personnel resources.
Following the closure, Smyrna police will partner with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office for inmate housing. The city already has similar agreements in place with neighboring municipalities like Sandy Springs and Roswell. Out of the 17 current jail employees, about 10 are anticipated to transition to other open positions within the city, with no anticipated reduction in their pay.
