- SMBC has invested nearly $7 billion in India, with wholesale exposure exceeding $10 billion.
- A YES Bank stake provides SMBC with crucial retail and employee banking capabilities.

Japan's SMBC has elevated India to a distinct strategic priority, creating a standalone regional division. This move, separating India from the Asia-Pacific umbrella, grants it a unique status alongside global regions like the Americas and EMEA. The reorganisation aims to enhance decision-making speed and agility.
SMBC's commitment to India, beginning in 2013, now totals nearly $7 billion in investments, with wholesale exposure exceeding $10 billion. This includes significant onshore advances, a substantial loan book from its GIFT City branch, and exposure through its Singapore operations.
The bank has secured approval for a wholly owned subsidiary, enabling broader expansion and product offerings. A strategic investment in YES Bank addresses a gap in SMBC's portfolio by providing retail and employee banking services, complementing its strength in corporate and multinational client support.
SMBC is also aligning its strategy with India's growth sectors, focusing on sustainable finance, energy transition, renewable energy, data centers, semiconductors, and the automotive industry. This positions the bank to capitalize on India's economic expansion, infrastructure investments, and increasing global supply chain integration.
