The 274-foot Seraph tower in Salt Lake City now offers 217 residential units, marking Utah's largest office-to-housing conversion. Originally built as office space 60 years ago, the building has been transformed by developer Hines in response to increased housing demand.
Plans for the conversion of the 1966-completed South Temple Tower began in 2022, aligning with post-pandemic shifts in urban living. The tower's unique constraints, such as smaller floor plates and parking capacity, became advantageous for residential use, with slightly higher ceilings than typical market offerings.
Converting the historic building presented significant challenges, including incomplete original blueprints and unexpected structural discoveries. Despite these complexities, the project aimed for completion by the end of 2025. The name 'Seraph' pays tribute to Seraph Young, a historical figure in women's suffrage in the United States.
