Summary
- Road work on State Loop 335 near West Plains High School is accelerated.
- The $47 million project includes an overpass and traffic signals.
- Construction was moved up from 2030 to an early winter start.

Traffic crews have received approval for accelerated road work on State Loop (SL) 335, enhancing safety near West Plains High School. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Amarillo office has greenlit the construction of main lanes on SL 335, extending from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Road.
The $47 million safety improvement project includes significant upgrades such as an overpass at Arden Road, new traffic signal lights, high-mast lighting, and shared-use paths. This initiative aims to improve safety and mobility for all travelers in the vicinity.
Construction for the SL 335 project is scheduled for bids in August, with work expected to commence in early winter. The project's timeline has been advanced from its original 2030 estimate to 2026, a move attributed to proactive efforts and secured funding.
Safety concerns were heightened after a student was struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk in June 2025. Following this incident, Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons were installed, and a signal light study confirmed the need for additional traffic signals in the area.
