Lithuania Gains Energy Independence with Siemens Tech
20 May
Summary
- Lithuania achieved energy independence by synchronizing with Europe.
- Battery parks and synchronous compensators ensure grid stability.
- Siemens Energy pioneers decarbonization solutions for shipping.

Lithuania has achieved a significant milestone by synchronizing with the European grid, securing full energy independence. Project manager Ina Tamosiuniene led two critical Siemens Energy initiatives: the integration of four battery parks for grid backup and the installation of three synchronous compensators to maintain system stability. This achievement is part of a larger European grid-independence project, enabling Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia to disconnect from the Russian grid in 2025 and enhance energy security.
In parallel, Siemens Energy is driving innovation in the maritime sector. Engineer Marvin Rust and his team are developing cutting-edge technologies to decarbonize shipping, which currently accounts for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Their work focuses on transitioning to cleaner fuels and electrification, including battery systems and fully electrified engines for ferries and yachts. Rust's team has also consulted on New York state's first electric-powered ferry, demonstrating a modular approach to marine power solutions.
