Shakti Pumps: From Sky-High Peaks to Grounded Reality
20 Aug
Summary
- Shakti Pumps stock surged 19x in two years, reaching Rs 1,277.
- Margin compression from 25% to 11% caused a significant stock drop.
- Company is pivoting to clean energy platform beyond solar pumps.

Shakti Pumps' stock saw an extraordinary 19x increase from Rs 66 in January 2023 to Rs 1,277 by January 2025, driven by the PM-KUSUM scheme. This surge was fueled by a 160% revenue jump and operating profit margin expansion from 7% to 24%.
However, from Q4 FY25 to Q3 FY26, operating profit margins compressed sharply by 1,400 basis points, from 25% to 11%. This decline was due to slowing scheme order momentum and increased fixed and interest costs.
The company is now pivoting, expanding into solar rooftops, cells, modules, and EV components. It plans substantial capex of Rs 1,500-1,700 crore through September 2027 to double capacities and add new manufacturing capabilities.
Shakti Pumps aims for Rs 5,000 crore revenue by FY29, with a focus on rebuilding margins toward 15% EBITDA through vertical integration. While ROCE remains strong at 23.6%, negative free cash flow requires careful management during this expansion phase.
At Rs 500, the stock trades at a discount to the industry P/E, reflecting its current margin challenges. Recent Q1 FY27 results show revenue stabilization at Rs 859 crore but margins at 10%, with an annualized PAT of approximately Rs 200 crore.
