Shake Shack's Discounted Price: A Major Investment Opportunity
8 May
Summary
- Stifel upgraded Shake Shack to buy, citing an overlooked discount.
- Shares dropped 28% after the company reported breaking even last quarter.
- The stock is trading at its cheapest forward EBITDA since the pandemic.

Shake Shack's shares experienced a sharp 28% decline on Thursday, reaching their lowest point since early 2024, subsequent to the release of their first-quarter earnings report. The company reported breaking even on a per-share basis, falling short of analyst projections. Same-store sales also narrowly missed expectations.
Despite the downturn, investment firm Stifel has upgraded Shake Shack to a 'buy' rating from 'hold.' Stifel analyst Chris O'Cull noted that the market appears to have overreacted to the disappointing first-quarter earnings and soft April sales. He believes significant operational leverage, particularly in general and administrative expenses, could drive meaningful earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) margin expansion beyond their 2026 projection of approximately 4%.
O'Cull further suggested that the stock, trading at roughly 12.5 times forward EBITDA, represents its most attractive valuation since the COVID-19 pandemic. Stifel's optimistic outlook aligns with the broader analyst consensus, with 18 out of 30 covering analysts holding a buy or strong buy recommendation. The company's focus on its value offerings, such as the $1-$3-$5 promotion, alongside new menu items and marketing initiatives, is expected to drive future traffic.
