Senegal Eyes Domestic Gas for Cheaper Power
17 Sep
Summary
- Senegal prioritizes domestic natural gas for cheaper electricity.
- The nation aims to reduce fuel import dependence and costs.
- New partners are sought to develop Senegal's gas resources.
Senegal is implementing a strategic shift to enhance its energy sector by prioritizing domestic natural gas production. This initiative is central to the government's plan to reduce the cost of electricity, thereby mitigating the impact of volatile global fuel prices. The West African nation is actively seeking new partnerships to accelerate the development of its natural gas reserves.
Expansions in oil and gas production have previously fueled Senegal's economic growth. However, sharp increases in international energy prices this year have strained the country's finances, particularly its fuel subsidy budget. The current administration, which took power in June, aims for substantial energy cost reductions, potentially up to 30%, through reforms and greater use of local resources.
Key projects like the Sangomar oil and gas field, operated by Woodside Energy, and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) liquefied natural gas project, led by BP, are vital to Senegal's energy future. The Yakaar-Teranga gas field, now under national oil company Petrosen, is also designated for both domestic sales and export, with Senegal remaining open to new collaborators under favorable terms.
