Semaglutide Market Explodes: Generics Expand, Not Replace
8 May
Summary
- Semaglutide market sales reached Rs 44 crore for both innovator and generic drugs in April.
- Torrent Pharmaceuticals leads generic semaglutide market with 38% share.
- Generic semaglutide expanded the overall market, not diminishing innovator sales.

The Indian market for semaglutide, a crucial drug for diabetes and obesity management, has experienced remarkable growth following the recent introduction of generic versions. In April, both Novo Nordisk's innovator molecule and its generic counterparts achieved sales of Rs 44 crore each. While the value of sales was equal, the volume tells a different story, with generic drugs significantly outselling innovator products by over four times.
This surge in generic semaglutide sales is not cannibalizing the market for the original innovator drugs. Instead, data indicates that these generics have successfully expanded the overall market, making the treatment more accessible. Torrent Pharmaceuticals has emerged as a dominant player in the generic space, securing 38% of the market share, partly due to its entry into the oral segment with brands like Semalix and Sembolic.
Eli Lilly's Tirzepatide, a dual-receptor drug, continues to lead the broader anti-obesity drug market in India, showing resilience after a minor dip in sales in March. The semaglutide market itself has seen substantial growth, increasing from Rs 48 crore in February to Rs 88 crore in April, with generics contributing significantly to this expansion.
