Sebi Eases Margin Rules for Early Stock Sales
22 Oct
Summary
- Sebi waives margin for trades using early stock sale proceeds.
- Clearing corporations will not collect additional margins.
- New rules take effect February 22, 2027.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has announced a waiver of margin requirements for trades financed by proceeds from early stock sales. This initiative, effective February 22, 2027, aims to alleviate margin-funding pressures for market participants.
Clearing corporations are now directed to forgo collecting additional margins from trading and clearing members on clients' subsequent positions, provided these do not exceed the value of accepted early pay-in (EPI) securities. This framework applies when a client has a net sell obligation and the clearing corporation has successfully accepted the EPI request for the sold securities.
Previously, even when investors used sale proceeds from EPI for same-day purchases, brokers had to block upfront margins. The new circular details how clearing corporations will now account for the available EPI value when clients establish new positions on the same trading day. Safeguards are in place for cases where clients reverse sales for which EPI benefits were utilized.
These revised provisions ensure that the release of sell-side margin upon early delivery of shares is more effectively utilized for subsequent trades within the same settlement cycle. The implementation date for these changes is set for February 22, 2027.
