8 Jul
Summary
- Sebi replaced dollar-denominated fees with rupee-based ones.
- Registration fees for Category I and II FPIs are revised.
- New rules for FPI fees will take effect in six months.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has announced a significant change in its fee structure for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs). Effective in six months from July 3, 2026, registration fees will be converted from US dollars to Indian Rupees.
This regulatory update revises fees for FPI categories. Category I FPIs will now face a registration fee of Rs 2.3 lakh, a substantial shift from the previous USD 2,500. Similarly, Category II FPIs will see their registration fee adjusted to Rs 23,000 from USD 250.
Beyond registration, Sebi has also adjusted other fees. The application fee for seeking general relaxations or exemptions has been set at Rs 90,000 in eligible foreign exchange equivalent, replacing the previous USD 1,000. Furthermore, the common application form for FPI registration now requires applicants' date of birth or incorporation date to aid in Permanent Account Number (PAN) allotment.
Designated Depository Participants (DDPs) are now mandated to remit the collected registration fees to Sebi within five working days of granting registration. This ensures timely submission of the rupee-denominated fees, streamlining the financial processes for FPIs operating within India.
