30 May
Summary
- New $101.9 million bridge construction starts June 1, 2026.
- Existing bridge deemed 'structurally deficient' in 2019.
- Project completion is expected in 2032 after six years.

A major construction project on the James H. Pruitt Memorial Bridge, commonly known as the Sebastian Inlet Bridge, is scheduled to commence on June 1, 2026. This undertaking, valued at $101.9 million, aims to replace the aging structure which was built in 1964.
In 2019, the bridge was officially declared "structurally deficient," a condition that mandates its replacement within six years. Officials noted in 2025 that both the substructure and superstructure of the State Road A1A bridge are in poor condition. The new span will feature a 51-foot vertical clearance and wider lanes.
The construction is slated to last six years, with an anticipated completion date in 2032. Drivers should anticipate single-lane closures on State Road A1A from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. during June 2026. Additionally, a portion of the Sebastian Inlet State Park's north parking lot will be closed from June 1, 2026, for the project's duration.
