Schwab Ditches Hybrid Robo Service
19 Dec, 2025
Summary
- Schwab to close its premium hybrid robo-advisor service next year.
- The core digital-only service remains open with a $5,000 minimum.
- Hybrid services are harder to scale than purely digital offerings.

Schwab will cease operations for its premium service, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios Premium, at the beginning of next year. This decision reflects a broader trend of traditional financial institutions scaling back their robo-advisor ambitions. The company, however, will maintain its widely used, digital-only Intelligent Portfolios service, which requires a $5,000 minimum investment and operates without a management fee.
Experts note that the difficulty in scaling hybrid services, which integrate human financial advisors with digital platforms, is a primary driver for Schwab's strategic shift. Unlike its basic digital offering, the premium tier necessitated adding staff as client numbers grew. Schwab's core service, launched in 2015, has amassed over $80 billion in assets, showcasing its success in scalability.
This move distinguishes Schwab from other financial giants that have exited the robo-advisor market completely. While hybrid models face scaling hurdles, Schwab's digital-only product, characterized by a significant cash allocation generating interest for the bank, has proven more resilient. Other major players like Vanguard, Betterment, and Wealthfront continue to offer both digital and hybrid solutions.
