Saudi Arabia is embarking on an ambitious economic transformation with the goal of becoming a global AI superpower, aiming to rival the US and China. The state-backed AI company HUMAIN, launched under the Saudi Public Investment Fund, is a key player in this strategy.
HUMAIN's CEO, Tareq Amin, highlighted the Kingdom's advantages, including cheap energy, vast land, and substantial sovereign wealth, positioning it as a major compute hub. The company recently achieved an early success with a $3 billion investment in Elon Musk's xAI.
Looking ahead, HUMAIN intends to launch a significant venture capital fund and expand its presence with offices in the US, France, and the UK. This expansion aims to accelerate investment and reduce reliance on its largest shareholder, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, by attracting more global investors.
The company seeks to become a neutral ground for open AI models, sidestepping geopolitical rivalries. Amin expressed a goal of achieving a 30-70 split between shareholder financing and third-party investment, emphasizing HUMAIN's transition from a vision to a tangible business with a strong value proposition.
Data center development requires substantial capital, with industry averages around $11 to $12 million per megawatt. HUMAIN plans to build up to 3 gigawatts, requiring significant funding. To support this, HUMAIN is accelerating its AI inferencing services and has secured commitments for substantial third-party financing, including $3 billion from Blackstone, to boost its debt and equity raises.
