Sasol Gets Green Light for EU Aviation Fuel Exports
23 Apr
Summary
- Sasol's sustainable aviation fuel achieved ISCC Plus certification.
- The fuel is produced from used cooking and vegetable oils.
- Exports will target the European Union market.

South African petrochemical firm Sasol has achieved a key milestone with its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), securing ISCC Plus certification from Germany's TUV SUD agency. This accreditation paves the way for Sasol to commence exports of its SAF to the European Union. The company produces this greener fuel utilizing used cooking oil and vegetable oil at its Natref plant.
This certification is particularly timely given global jet fuel supply disruptions. Sasol is strategically positioning its SAF production to meet rising demand. The Natref plant, transitioning into a hybrid bio-refinery, aims to produce between one to two million litres of SAF this year, scaling up to 100 million litres by 2030. Sasol also collaborates with other firms to develop sustainable feedstocks for broader SAF production.
Sasol's SAF initiative aligns with its broader goals to reduce its carbon footprint and adapt to evolving cleaner fuel standards. The company's efforts in sustainable fuel production underscore a growing trend in the aviation industry towards environmental responsibility.
