Saskatoon Pool Project Soars Past $100M Mark

Saskatoon's first new indoor pool since 2009 is now projected to cost over $100 million. City council has unanimously approved discussions with the YMCA regarding the operation of the facility. The estimated construction cost for the recreation centre and pool has escalated significantly, with the more ambitious plan now costing between $102.7 million and $107.7 million.

This enhanced plan includes an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and an 11,000-square-foot fitness area, a considerable expansion from the original proposal. City administration cited construction cost inflation and tariffs on steel as primary drivers for the increased expenses. Council also supported a motion to explore options for two additional lanes, potentially funded through fundraising.

The city last saw a new recreation centre in 2007 with the Shaw Centre, while Saskatoon's population has grown substantially since then. Talks are underway to explore potential shared access between YMCA memberships and existing city recreation passes. The city is also considering selling naming rights for the new venue. A federal infrastructure fund is contributing $29.7 million, with additional funding from a neighborhood land development fund and borrowing.

If operated by the YMCA, the city estimates saving approximately $1.6 million annually. This development comes as the downtown YMCA building is slated for demolition as part of a downtown arena district project. The new east-side facility's construction timeline may extend by six months to a year due to the expanded scope.
